Can I Sell Mineral Rights on My Land?

Can I Sell Mineral Rights on My Land?

If you own land, one of the advantages you have is that anything that is found on the land is yours to keep. For instance, if you find that the land you own is sitting on a spot where there is oil, or some type of mineral, then you could be in for a good payday. There are two options that you can take if you discover this possibility, or you think you may have something on your land based on what was found nearby.

You could either look for those minerals or the oil yourself, or you could sell the mineral rights to your land and let someone else do that work. If you have a good amount of capital, time and a lot of patience, then we suggest you go ahead and try to find that oil or those minerals on your own. However, it is a complex process and it involves a lot of upfront investment. Most families would not want to do something of that nature. That is why knowing how to sell mineral rights is something that could help you a lot more. But how does that work? And would you have to sell your land?

The first thing we must tell you is that you will NOT have to sell your land, only the rights to any minerals that may be on that land. What you get in return is an upfront payment, which will not change based on how many minerals are found. They could find nothing, and you still keep the money. They could find something worth 50 million, but you still get that payment you agreed to earlier. That is the risk and reward of such a transaction. For most, it represents an easy way to make some money up front!
